About Long Island
Bike Co-op

Mostly, we take unwanted bikes, fix them up, then give them away freely.

Your Journey to a Fulfilling Life

We also teach bike-related classes to kids and adults.

GIVING AWAY BICYCLES DOES THREE THINGS

It promotes a healthy activity, and all of the wonderful health and mental benefits that follow from bike riding,

It keeps a surprising amount of trash out of the waste stream, and

It gives people who need it some free transportation.

How all this works

We give away about 1100 bikes a year and recycle about 25 tons of bikes, from three locations.

We are an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) incorporated in 2019, that started as the Brookhaven Bicycle Co-op. We changed our name to the Long Island Bike co-op to reflect our growth.

We get most of our bikes from universities, individuals, and local bike stores (with a special thank you to the Trek Store, Plainview)

We give out our bikes through food pantries, local churches, social workers and and to anyone who shows up needing a bike.

The Present

Today, Long Island Bike Co-op is bustling hive of activity, and despite having the greatest bunch of volunteers in the world, we can’t keep up with the demand for bikes .

We are constantly reminded that bike people tend to be really good people.

Support the Co-op by donating either your time or money.
